A woman's Toyota crashes at church.

An elderly woman is lucky to be alive after her Toyota Camry veered out of control in a church parking lot in New Britain and down a flight of stairs on Tuesday.

The 76-year-old member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church was there to drop off items for a tag sale and tried to park her car when she experienced a problem that sounds like those that have prompted a massive recall on the cars.

As she tried to park, the engine would not stop, Father James Bogiatzis said.

"She was unable to stop the car and it went through the grass … and then it hit the railings in front of the church," Bogiatzis said.

Then the ordeal got even scarier -- the car went down the stairs.

"She's doing fine now and I would say that the fact that she is alive is a miracle," Bogiatzis said.

The woman’s daughter brought her to a local hospital for observation.

"The police told me I should be a NASCAR driver," the woman told the Bristol Press.

She had received the recall notice from Toyota the day before.
