Water Main Break Caused Major Traffic Troubles

Interstate 91 looked like a river Wednesday morning, both of water and cars. The highway was closed for hours after a construction crew accidentally struck a 36-inch water main.

The break occurred on the northbound side between exits 2 and 3 in Massachusetts and delays spilled into Connecticut.

Early Wednesday morning, both sides of the highway were closed from exit 3 in Springfield to exit 49 in Enfield. Northbound lanes were being rerouted down Route 5.

Exit 3 on the northbound side of the highway remained closed as of 11:45 a.m. but everything else has reopened.

The southbound lanes reopened just before 9 a.m. and Route 5, along with Interstate 91 in Enfield, reopened around 11:30 a.m.

The travel lanes, both north and south of Springfield are open as of 11:40 a.m., according to Massachusetts State Police.
