Travelers Championship Week Arrives

Tournament week got underway for the 2011 Travelers Championship Monday morning.

Honorary Chairman, Gov. Dannel Malloy, helped kick off the festivities at an opening ceremony on the first tee at the TPC at River Highlands in Cromwell.

"Let me assure you, this is one of the premiere events in the state of Connecticut," Malloy said.

More than 150 players make up what may be the best field of talent the tournament has seen in several years. Defending champion Bubba Watson will be joined by former major winners, Jim Furyk, Vijay Singh, David Toms and Geoff Ogilvy. Also in the field this year are fan favorites Ricky Fowler and Anthony Kim and John Daly.

Wednesday is the celebrity pro-am, with famous names like actor Joe Pesci, singers Michael Bolton and Eddie Money, Celtics and UConn great Ray Allen, and ESPN anchor Chris Berman hitting the links.

The pros will tee it up for tournament play beginning Thursday, with a champion crowned Sunday afternoon.
