Tribe Employees Try To Organize

They lost an election last year, but Brian Petronella, president of Local 371 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, says tribal labor relations laws contributed to that defeat.

But another attempt is now underway to organize bartenders, beverage servers and others at Mashantucket Indians' Foxwoods casino.

Petronella said that in the previous election, the tribe counted those who did not vote as "no" votes.

Now, Local 371 wants the National Labor Relations Board to supervise a new election in an attempt to organize a union. NLRB does not count votes that are not cast.

Foxwoods says Mashantucket Pequot labor relations law provides a fair process for employees to select union representation and that tribal law should apply.

The NLRB has set a hearing for this Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the Hartford office of the National Labor Relations Board.
