Triple Murder Mastermind Attacked in Prison

The convicted mastermind of a triple murder in Windsor Locks was attacked in prison Wednesday.

Benedetto Cipriani, was severely beaten by another inmate at McDougal Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield, State Police said. He was taken to UConn Health Center in Farmington, where he was listed in serious condition, according to police.

In 2009, Cipriani, 55, of Meriden, was sentenced to 200 years for the 2003 murder-for-hire plot at a Windsor Locks auto body shop. Prosecutors claimed Cipriani hired three men to kill Robert Stears, 42, the husband of Cipriani's lover, because she refused to leave her husband. Also killed in the July 13, 2003 murders was Stears' business partner Barry Rossi, 43 and mechanic Lorne Stevens, 43.

Police have not said if they have identified the inmate accused of assaulting Cipriani.
