USCG Rescues Schoolchildren from Grounded Boat Near Mouth of Mystic River

The United States Coast Guard rescued a group of schoolchildren from a grounded Schooner near the mouth of the Mystic River Sunday evening.

USCG officials said they were called around 6:15 p.m. for a report of a 126-foot Schooner with 17 passengers and six crew members ran aground. The Schooner was a charter boat carrying seventh-grade students from New York who were on a field trip. The 14 students and three chaperones were safely transferred to Noank shipyard in Groton.

No injuries or pollution were reported.

USCG Sector Long Island Sound will investigate to ensure the vessel is safe before it can operate again.
