But before you head on out looking for your typical vanilla and chocolate ice cream, be warned. The menu includes beer-infused premium ice cream.
Yes, you read that right -- beer-infused premium ice cream! Seems like best of both worlds. The Old Lyme Ice Cream Shoppe is now serving The Brewer’s Cow beer-infused premium ice cream, made with the best 16 percent butterfat cream that New England has to offer, according to Jason Conroy owner of the ice cream parlor.
It all began with a little experimentation done by the previous owner of the ice cream shop, now president of The Brewer’s Cow, Steve Albert. Since then, beer-infused ice cream has been changing locals' views on ice cream.
“It first begins with a little curiosity, and after sampling it, nine out of 10 times, people like it a lot,” said Conroy. “It’s just one of those things that’s unique to the shop.”
Unique is right, and that applies to the taste as well. Conroy explained that it begins with a sweet and malty taste and ends with a hint of your favorite beer. The three beers used as base for these ice creams are Guinness, Sam Adams and Ten Penny Ale.
“It’s not an overpowering beer taste.” Conroy said.
Both Albert and Conroy, along with their third business partner, Larry Blackwell, are in the works to take The Brewer’s Cow beer-infused premium ice cream to a national level.
“Right now it’s in its infancy. The possibilities are endless,” said Conroy.
Locally, the Brewer’s Cow provides a few bars and restaurants with their one-of-a-kind sensational beer ice cream.
At New Haven’s Prime 16 Tap House and Burgers, the Guinness Ice Cream Float has become the latest addition to their dessert menu.
Manager of Prime 16, Jonathan Edwards, said it’s very popular and for the most part customers love it.
