Lt. G. Marshall Sanford, 67, died on Sunday night while responding to a brush fire at Redding Country Club.

He collapsed while transporting equipment and died of an unknown medical issue as he hauled equipment to the scene of a fire, a spokesman for the Redding Volunteer Fire and EMS Company No. 1 told the Danbury News Times.

Sanford was a veteran of the fire department with 50 years of experience.

“For more than 50 years, Mr. Sanford served the Redding Ridge Fire Company with extraordinarily dedication and commitment.  We deeply respect his work protecting the community, and we stand with the many residents and firefighters who are grieving his loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to 1st Lieutenant Sanford’s family and friends at this terrible time," Gov, Dannel Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman said in a news release.

The flags will be lowered at the state Capitol on the day of Sanford's funeral.
