Christmas Day Water Main Break Affects 20 Homes

MDC: 20 homes affected, service restored after a few hours

A water main break affected service to about 20 homes in East Hartford Friday.

The break happened just before 6:33 a.m. at the intersection of Route 5 (Ellington Road) and Goodwin Street, according to police.

Melissa Muszynski, spokeswoman for the Metropolitan District Commission says that the 8-inch break will take between six to eight hours to repair, but most customers have had their water service already restored. There are only about two homes still without water.

Muszynski said the water main dates back to 1945, and extreme cold and fluctuating temperatures stress older pipes and can lead to breaks.

The intersection of Route 5 and Goodwin Street was closed until about 9 p.m. as crews made repairs.
