Watertown Police Arrest Burglary Suspect

Watertown police have arrested a man accused of breaking into a local business and stealing cash and a laptop computer.

Christopher Gurtowski, 40, of Watertown faces charges of third-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief, and 5th-degree larceny.

According to police, on Friday around 6:10 a.m. they received a report of a burglary at the Hello Sweetie Bakeshop at 51 Depot Road. The suspect broke a window to get in, then made off with cash from the register and a laptop computer.

Police said they identified the suspect as Gurtowski using surveillance footage from various businesses in the area. He was arrested later the same day on Greenwood Street after a citizen recognized him and called police.

According to police, Gurtowski admitted to committing the crime and said he threw the laptop into a dumpster after he realized it was locked.

Gurtowski was issued a $10,000 bond and is expected in Waterbury Superior Court on August 30.
