Wauregan Man Accused of DUI, Assaulting an Officer

Matthew Gallant allegedly attacked an officer when police tried to arrest him

Connecticut police arrested a man after they say he crashed his car while drunk, fled the scene and then allegedly assaulted an officer.

Police responded to reports of an overturned vehicle in a field off All Hallows Road in the Wauregan section of Plainfield just before 10 p.m. Friday. When officers arrived, they found the Ford Ranger unoccupied.

The car was registered to 21-year-old Matthew Gallant. Officers went to Gallant's Depot Road home and found him highly intoxicated. He was uncooperative, according to police, and attacked an officer when police attempted to arrest him. After a struggle, he was arrested. Both Gallant and the officer had minor injuries but both declined treatment, police said.

Gallant refused to be tested for drugs and alcohol and was subsequently booked on charges of DUI, interfering with a police investigation and assault on a police officer.

He was released on bond and scheduled to appear in Danielson Superior Court on August 1.
