U.S. Open Champ Webb Simpson to Play at Travelers

Simpson plans to honor his commitment to tournament in Cromwell

Less than 12 hours after the end of the U.S. Open, the Travelers Championship officially kicked off tournament week in Cromwell Monday.

Webb Simpson, the man who won the U.S. Open at Olympic Club in San Francisco Sunday night, is still among the 155 players who will tee it up at the TPC River Highlands beginning Thursday.

"I talked to his agent last night. He's still coming," said Nathan Grube, Travelers Championship tournament director.

Simpson committed to playing at the Travelers this spring, but winning a major in California the day before the next tournament on a players schedule can change a lot. Simpson will be the first reigning U.S. Open champion to play in Cromwell since Lucas Glover in 2009. Glover won at Bethpage Black on Long Island, a much easier trip than Simpson will have to make from San Francisco.

With Simpson playing this week, the Travelers field will include the past three major champions - Master champion Bubba Watson, and last year's winner of the PGA, Keegan Bradley. Watson's first PGA Tour win came at the Travelers Championship in 2010. Watson was scheduled to throw out the first pitch at the Mets game at Citi Field Monday night.

Travelers Championship is marking its 60th year as a PGA Tour event this year.
