West Haven Children Were Living in Squalor: Cops

Two children are living with family members and officials removed two chickens and two cats.

Two West Haven residents were arrested after police found two children living in squalor.

Police went to a house on Westfield Street around 10 a.m. on Tuesday and found live chickens inside the house, as well as animal feces, mold, dangerous combustible materials, a propane tank connected to a hot plate and several blocked exits, according to a news release from police.

Police said there were also piles of dirty laundry and piles of dirty dishes.

Old food was scattered around the home.

Outside, police found stripped boats, tires, propane tanks, unregistered vehicles and piles of scrap metal around the yard.

Police said there were about 1,000 reports of property and housing code violations.

Community resource officers, city building department officials, firefighters, animal control, health inspectors and the Department of Children and Families all responded as well.

Tanya Domerest, 31, and Wayne Farquharson, 55, were charged with risk of injury to a child and abatement of a fire hazard.

The building department has deemed the house uninhabitable and the two children are living with a family member as the Department of Children and Families investigates.

Police seized two rifles and a shotgun. Animal control took two cats and two chickens.
