Former West Haven Cop Arrested After Police Chase

West Haven police have arrested a retired police officer who they said led authorities on a chase that ended in a crash with injuries, according to police and news reports.

Police responded to a home on Richmond Avenue around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday because a despondent man was threatening to harm himself, police said.

The New Haven Register reports that photographs show police with guns drawn at the scene where the incident began.

As officers arrived, the man began driving away, so police chased him until a collision at the intersection of Main Street and Painter Avenue.

The man, Steven Turtzo, 48, who retired from the West Haven Police Department in 2007, was transported for medical treatment, according to police.

On Wednesday, he was charged with several counts of threatening, assault on police, engaging officers in pursuit, illegal carry of a firearm and several motor vehicle charges.

Turtzo was arraigned in court late Wednesday afternoon.

Deputy Chief Joseph Perno told the New Haven Register on Wednesday that no shots were fired and the man struck one police car with his vehicle as he left his driveway and another where the incident ended, as well as other vehicles along the way.

Perno said several handguns were seized and "there was interaction between the officers and him at the home," according to the Associated Press.
