Woman Rescued from Burning Derby Home: Report

The woman uses a walker or cane and was not able to get out of the house on her own, Esteves told the Independent.

An elderly woman was rescued from a fire that might have displaced 19 people in Derby.

The Valley Independent reports that Chris Esteves went into the burning apartment building at 92-94 Olivia Street and rescued the woman.

The woman uses a walker or cane and was not able to get out of the house on her own, Esteves told the Independent.

It was not the first time he has pulled someone from a burning building. In 2009, he pulled someone from a burning home in Ansonia, the Independent reports. That person later died.

The fire started on the third-floor porch, Thomas Lenart, assistant chief of the Derby Fire Department, said, and officials believe that discarded smoking materials caused the blaze.

The calls came in around 1 p.m.

No one was injured.
