Work Begins on Playground in Honor of Grace McDonnell

Volunteers turned out over the weekend to begin work on another playground named for a young victim of the Newtown school shooting.

The (New London) Day reports the parents of Grace McDonnell chose the site at Williams Beach, behind the Mystic YMCA, in part because the first-grader had loved the beach.

She spent time on Martha’s Vineyard with her family each summer and hoped to grow up to be a painter.

One of her paintings is in President Barack Obama’s private study in the White House.

“I hung it in my private study, just out of the Oval Office. And every time I look at that painting, I think about Grace, and I think about the life that she lived, and the life that lay ahead of her, and most of all, I think about how, when it comes to protecting the most vulnerable among us, we must act now – for Grace, for the 25 other innocent children and devoted educators who had so much left to give,” Obama said during an address last April, in which he called upon Congress members to vote on gun control.

The playground's foundation was poured on Saturday and a ribbon cutting is planned for next weekend.
