Worker Rescued After Trench Fall

Firefighters used ropes to pull the man to safety

A Middletown Water Department employee was hospitalized after falling into a trench Wednesday.

The man was working on a construction project on Bailey Road around 10 a.m. when the accident occurred. The worker was trying to attach a chain to a steel box when he lost his footing and fell about 10 feet down into the trench, according to fire officials.

Part of the trench wall began to collapse on the man, fire officials said. Firefighters lowered ropes to the victim and he was able to make his way out of the trench with their assistance. He was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident.
