A stunning report released this week shows that more than 240,000 adults in Connecticut lack basic reading skills.
That means 9 percent of people in the state 16 and older can't understand important documents like doctor's instructions or mortgage papers.
The numbers released by The National Center for Education Statistics Thursday are from 2003.
Some literacy advocates said the problems in poor areas of the state are much worse than the data implies.
But, believe it or not, the numbers are much better than the last time the study was done, which stated 14 percent of Connecticut residents lacked basic reading skills in 1992.
