Access Health CT Extends Insurance Sign-Up Deadline

Connecticut's health insurance exchange is extending its open enrollment period for another month.

Access Health CT's deadline to sign up for health insurance coverage beginning Jan. 1 is Saturday at midnight. However, the exchange announced Saturday afternoon that customers now have until Jan. 15 to sign up for coverage that starts on Feb. 1.

The previously planned extension comes after a federal district court judge in Texas ruled the Affordable Care Act is "invalid" following last year's tax cut bill, which knocked the constitutional foundation from under the law by eliminating a penalty for not having coverage.

Access Health CT Chief Executive Officer James Michel says the ruling does not affect the ability of Connecticut residents to sign up for and use 2019 insurance plans through the exchange.

Free help will continue to be available during the extension. Information is available online, by phone or at enrollment fairs.

There will be an enrollment fair on Tuesday, January 8, at the gym at the Keefe Community Center on Pine Street in Hamden from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Visitors are asked to park in the parking lot behind the center on George Street.

The second enrollment fair will be on Saturday, January 12, at the gym at the East Hartford Community Cultural Center on Chapman Place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is a parking lot next to the building.

The final enrollment fair will be on Tuesday, January 15, at the fourth floor conference room at St. Vincent's Medical Center Cancer Center on Main Street in Bridgeport from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Parking is available in the main garage.
