3 Hurt in Serious Crash on Route 8 in Harwinton

Route 8 is back open in Harwinton after a serious crash Christmas night.

State police said an accident involving three cars caused Route 8 Northbound to be closed between exits 41 and 42.

State police originally believed one person has died after being involved in the crash. Now they tell NBC Connecticut that no one has died as a result of this crash.

A Life Star helicopter responded to the scene and transported one driver to a hospital.

A second driver was transported by ambulance to St. Mary's Hospital. The third driver was treated on scene and refused transport to the hospital.

"Our guys did a tremendous job with the cold weather and it being Christmas evening and everything outside," said Harwinton Deputy Fire Chief Terrence Ferrarotti.

Animal control also scrambled to bring a dog to an emergency veterinarian. Harwinton Animal Control said Tuesday that the dog suffered some bumps and bruises but no serious injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
