Accused Kidnapping Mom Appears in Court

A 22-year-old New London woman accused of fleeing with her infant son from a visit supervised by a state child welfare official was arraigned Monday on the charges in state Superior Court.

Judge Kevin McMahon in New London lowered Dehanna Nobleza's bail from $50,000 to $10,000 and ordered her to not have contact with the month-old child.

Nobleza was charged Friday with custodial interference and risk of injury to a minor. Waterford police said she escaped with the boy during a supervised visit at the Crystal Mall on Oct. 30.  Her disappearance with the child caused a statewide search for mother and son.

The boy was returned unharmed the next day by a friend of Nobleza.

Police said the state took custody of the boy for several reasons, including Nobleza's history of mental health and substance abuse problems.

Nobleza's lawyer said she's now on medication.
