Accused Purse Snatcher Nabbed by DNA on Sweatshirt

Police said they invetigated for five years.

Police in East Haven spent five years investigating a purse snatching and have arrested a local man based on DNA from a sweatshirt.

Kenneth Romans, 42, of East Haven, is accused of a violent purse snatching on Main Street just after 7 p.m. on Sept. 15, 2006 that left a middle age woman suffering from serious facial injuries, police said.

The woman was transported to Yale- New Haven hospital and treated.

As police began searching for the purse snatcher, they found the woman’s purse and a man’s sweatshirt.

In December, police obtained a search and seizure warrant for Romans’ DNA and sent it to the Connecticut State Police Forensic Lab in Meriden, where it matched DNA from the sweatshirt, police said.

Police arrested Romans at his house on March 23 at 6:04 p.m.

He was charged with second-degree larceny, first-degree robbery and first-degree assault.

He is being held on a court ordered $200,000.00 bond.
