Apple Releases New Security System to Deter Thieves

There's a new line of defense for iPhone users. Apple released a new security feature with it's latest operating system, iOS 7 that can help put an end to iPhone thefts worldwide.

The new feature is called the Activation Lock and it is used to help counteract thieves and protect users.

"This means you can erase your data remotely if you recognize your phone has been stolen, you can erase it and you can lock it and the thief can't do anything with it," said Richard Hanley, Professor of Journalism at Quinnipiac University.

Hanley says the activation lock would make it very difficult for a thief to steal your data or to even resell the phone."This is a key security feature that will, I think mitigate some of the iPhone thefts," Hanley added.

Students at Yale can only hope this new operating system Apple debuted will help.

"I know several guys on my team actually have lost phones to this," said Yale sophomore Carson Cooper and member of the hockey team. "And their location finder has been turned off so maybe if they're not able to turn it off, they'll be able to find it."

Apple says the feature is used to deter thieves from apple picking in the future. Police on Yale's campus and in New Haven often warn residents to be on the lookout for these types of thefts

"I don't know if it will be a deterrent because I mean with the software there's always someone that could unlock it," said Brittany Robinson, a Yale senior.

Law enforcement officials are on board with the new operating system. However, some students say that even with the new software there's no substitute for simply paying attention to your surroundings.
