Bernie's Reopening Is a No-Go

It doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. After filing for bankruptcy protection in January, Bernie’s, the TV and appliance store, had planned to reopen its Manchester store on June 1.

"They're not opening," a source close to the company told the Hartford Courant

It’s unclear what contributed to this decision but some believe the announced opening of P.C. Richard, a nearby store in the Buckland area, might be to blame. They’re direct competitors because they sell just about the same kind of home merchandise.

Bernie’s has been through quite a lot. The company recently liquidated 15 stores, including nine in Connecticut. Last month, owner Milton Rosenberg told the newspaper that he would reopen Bernie’s Home Center at the site of the former Bernie’s store on Hale Road.

The paper reports that Rosenberg bought the name Bernie's out of bankruptcy court in Hartford for $150,000 from Citizens Bank and he was expected to pull nearly two dozen former workers to run the new store.

This reopening had been regarded as the second post-bankruptcy rebirth of the Bernie's chain. The first time happened in the 1980s.
