It could've been the scene from a movie, complete with a bumbling crook:  The scene was the Bowtie Cinema in Hartford.

A suspect walked through the front door, entering the lobby with a handgun drawn, demanding money.

When one of the employees went to open the register, the suspect put the gun on the counter so he could grab the loot.  That's when the employee grabbed the gun off the counter.

The suspect ran away on foot without his gun -- or any money.

Police showed up and are searching for the suspect.
