Home Alone Gas Spill Leads to Charges for Mom

A Naugatuck mom has been arrested after cops say she left her 9-year-old son alone and he spilled gas on himself.

At 6:45 a.m. on Thursday, a neighbor woke up to a knock on the door. It was her 9-year-old neighbor, she told police. He said he smelled gas, she told police.

The boy’s mother, Laura Behlman, 31, had left him at home when she went to work in town and the son spilled gas on himself while playing with a can of gasoline, police said. He had also spilled some near a vehicle.

Police found Behlman at work and she has been charged with risk of injury to a minor.

She was released on a promise to appear in Waterbury Superior Court on Friday.

The Associated Press called Behlman on Friday. She didn't answer her cell phone.

The state child welfare officials are investigating, police said.
