Boys & Girls Club Exec Accused of Embezzlement

Club officials said they are trying to start fresh.

The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Waterbury is focusing on the new school year amid news that its former executive director is accused of embezzlement.

Robert Generali, 52, was arrested, accused of stealing at least $96,000 from the federally-funded organization from January 2010 until he was forced to resign in June of this year.

Board President Bill Campion said the chapter has cut all ties with Generali and looks forward to a fresh start.

“We’ve started a new chapter in our history here. We are heading in a new direction and it’s a new beginning for us,” Campion said.

According to the FBI, Generali used the money to pay for limo rides, lavish steak dinners, jewelry, $400 sunglasses, even clothing.

Parents said this is the wrong example to set for any kid.

“It’s a shame because there are a lot of kids out there that go to the Boys & Girls club and enjoy being there. For something like that to happen when that money should be going to the kids, well, it’s a shame,” Victor Valentin, of Waterbury, said.

If Generali is convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison. The FBI is looking into the possibility that even more money was stolen.

Generali was released on a $100,000 bond.
