A Branford man is accused of trying to rob a woman making a deposit at the ATM.
Anthony Gambardella, 56, of Branford, face charges of first-degree robbery, first-degree threatening, breach of peace and criminal attempt to commit larceny.
Police said around 1 a.m. Tuesday they received a 911 call from a female victim reported that a man had tried to rob her while she was making a nightly business deposit at an ATM at 1 South Main Street.
Police responded and found the suspect, later identified as Gambardella, lying on the ground near the ATM. He told police the victim had run over his foot with her vehicle.
According to police, the victim had just finished her deposit when Gambardella approached her driver’s side window. The victim reported that he told her to give him her money or he would shoot her. When the victim told Gambardella that she didn’t have any money, Gambardella reportedly reached into his pants pocket and again said he would shoot her.
Police said he then leaned into the vehicle, grabbed the steering wheel, and tried to reach the victim’s pocketbook. The victim drove off and called 911.
Police said they did not find a gun.

Gambardella was treated on scene by Branford fire paramedics then transported to a medical facility for treatment of foot injuries. He was then taken into custody and charged. He is being held on a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.
