Bronx Boy Dies After Being Pulled From Pond

A 9-year-old Bronx, N.Y. boy who was swimming with his family at Squantz Pond State Park in New Fairfield Monday died after being pulled from the water.

The boy was swimming with his family just after 5 p.m., when his mother noticed he was missing, State Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Dennis Schain said.

Witnesses said a woman jumped in the water and pulled the boy out.

Magda Giraldo, of Brooklyn, N.Y., told the News Times that a woman started screaming "Edwin, Edwin."

"Several minutes went by, and nobody knew where the kid was. Then a lady jumped into the water and pulled him out," she told the newspaper.

Schain says signs and park employees warned visitors that no lifeguards were on duty because most are high school or college students and have gone back to school.

The boy, whose name has not been released, died Monday at Danbury Hospital, several hours after he was found underwater in the pond.
