Bus Crashes Into Apartment Building in Vernon

A Greater Hartford Transit bus has crashed into an apartment building on West Street in Vernon around 5:30 a.m. Friday and a woman was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. at apartments at 100 West St. Officials said the driver hit the gas instead of the brake while making a U-turn.

Residents said the bus typically picks someone up from the building across the way.

The bus has been removed and contractors worked to secure the building so it would not collapse.

Neighbors were startled by the crash.

“I ran over to see if everyone was OK and I heard the building like creak, like crackling like it was going to fall,” said Paul Hatch, who lives a few doors down from the crash scene.

One woman has been displaced.

“The building official arrived on the scene and made the apartment in question uninhabitable until it’s able to be structurally supported,” Assistant Fire Chief Robert Babcock said.

Residents of the other units were allows to go back inside.
