Buyers Sought for Two Papers

Two CT newspapers could soon fall victim to the very economy they've been reporting on.

The publisher of The Herald of New Britain and the Bristol Press said the two newspapers would go under by January unless buyers step forward.

Both newspapers are owned by the Journal Register Co., which has been struggling in recent months.

Journal Register also owns the New Haven Register, The Middletown Press, The Register Citizen of Torrington, 17 weekly newspapers in Connecticut and Connecticut Magazine

Edward Gunderson, publisher of The Herald and the Press, told employees in a memo on Monday they could be out of work.

"In the event that there is no buyer, then we anticipate the facility will be shut down. ... You will not have the right to displace other employees," he said.

Both newspapers date back to the late 1800s.
