Canton Homeowner Bruised by Bear: Police

Canton police are reminding residents to be on the lookout for bears after an Atwater Road resident had a run-in Friday afternoon.

Police say they were called to 20 Atwater Road around 3:36 p.m. on a report that a bear nipped the homeowner. When they arrived they found the complainant with a minor bruise. She reported she was gardening and a bear approached and nipped her. She said she scared the bear off and it ran into the woods.

The woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was called in to locate the animal. As of Saturday, DEEP officials say the bear has not been located.

Police remind residents to keep a safe distance from bears and to remove things that attract bears such as bird feeders and garbage cans. For more information visit the DEEP website.
