Car Hits House in West Hartford

A driver of a pickup hit a house at 35 Fuller Drive in West Hartford as well as a water main after swerving to avoid another vehicle on Wednesday morning, according to officials.

"The vehicle was traveling southbound on Mohegan (Drive). Apparently, another vehicle had cut out in front of it, coming out of Fuller and the operator of the pickup truck just lost control and drove straight into the house," Lt Kevin McCarthy, of the department of traffic division, said.

Fuller Drive runs perpendicular to Mohegan Drive and the Nham family’s house is right on the corner.

In addition to hitting the house, the driver also struck a water main, sending about a foot of water into the basement, so the Metropolitan District, or MDC, also responded. Most of it has been pumped out.

Yves Nham was asleep in the house when the truck struck. He said he heard a loud boom and felt the house shake.

"I was sleeping before 7, and I was like, ‘What happened?’ and my mom said, ‘Oh, someone hit a car in here!" Nham said.

Outside, the pickup driver was trapped inside the truck and emergency crews needed to lift the dashboard up to get him out.

The process took about 30 minutes and an ambulance transported the driver from the scene.
"We’re not aware of any particular injuries. He was transported to the hospital for evaluation," McCarthy said. He has since been released, police said on Wednesday afternoon.

The six adults and three children who were inside the home when the truck hit it are all OK but must now worry about damage to the exterior and interior of the home.

Officials will now work to determine whether the home is structurally sound. In the meantime, the family will be staying with other relatives.
