A 23-year-old man who was pulled from Lake McDonough in Barkhamsted has died.
Lifeguards and rescue crews found the swimmer, Andres Burgos, around 4 p.m. on Saturday near West Beach. He had been under water for possibly as long as 45 minutes, according to witnesses.
The 23-year-old was swimming with others in what was designated as a non-swimming area of the lake when he began having trouble and went under, witnesses said.
Several local fire departments searched, using boats, and several lifeguards and volunteers helped in the search.
Burgos was found at the bottom of the lake, state police said.
Burgos was taken to Charlotte-Hungerford Hospital in Torrington and then to Hartford Hospital via Lifestar helicopter, where he was pronounced dead, state police said.
