Chemical Reaction Causes Concern at UConn Science Building

The first floor of the Edward V. Gant Science Complex at UConn was cleared out Wednesday afternoon following a chemical reaction during an experiment.  The building is located at North Eagleville Drive in Storrs.

Officials at UConn have said an explosion, as first reported around 3:45 p.m., has been ruled out.

Fifteen people on the first floor of the five-story building were taken to safety.

The UConn Fire Department determined that a lab experiement mixing five chemicals in a chemical waste container caused the reaction.

No one was injured.

Waste products from the spill were taken to a hazardous waste facility and the D.E.P was notified.
