Acid Spill Closes Route 7, New Milford

Route 7 was closed at Route 202 until about 9:30 a.m. after an unmarked gallon container fell off an unmarked truck, a car hit it and it created a cloud of smoke, police said.

Both sides of the road were closed for a couple miles because officials did not know what the chemical is. It turned out that the chemical was muriatic acid, which is often used to clean pools.

Officials sprayed several thousand gallons of water on the spill to neutralize the acid. Anyone who drove through the mess should give their car a thorough cleaning.

“Any vehicle that drove through this area around 7 a.m. this morning should take their cars to a car wash, get them all scrubbed down, get the undercarriage of the vehicle sprayed off,” Captain Michael Mrazik, of New Milford police, said.

Law requires acids like this be in clear containers and marked to identify their contents.
