Drivers Line Up for $2.99 Gas

Dozens of drivers filled their tanks at Danby’s Gulf Express in Meriden, for $2.99 per gallon of gasoline.

New Life Church gave drivers an early Easter gift by offering gasoline for $2.99 a gallon at a Meriden gas station for one hour on Saturday afternoon.

Between 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., drivers were able to fill up their tanks at Danby’s Gulf Express, 872 East Main St. in Meriden, for $2.99 per gallon for regular gasoline.

New Life Church will make up the difference to say “Happy Easter” to the community, according to a news release from the church.

Over 100 cars showed up. Drivers began lining up for the discounted gas around 11 a.m. Saturday.

"I got here at 11 a.m. to be the first one. It's worth it, it's definitely worth it," said Mark Calvet of Meriden.

Pastor Will Marotti, the senior, founding pastor, of the church said a staff member came up with the idea last year, but it was not feasible economically at the time.

“We felt like we could handle it this year and thought it would be something good to do for the community,” Marotti said.

The gas station is located in easy proximity to Interstate 91 and Route 15 and gas prices range from $3.94 to $4.83 per gallon as of Thursday, according to Gasbuddy.com.

Marotti said the church contacted police for crowd control and many church members volunteered to help by washing car windows as drivers waited.

There was a 20-gallon limit per customer and drivers were not allowed to fill gas cans.

Members and staff of New Life Church were not eligible to participate.
