CL&P: We're Focusing on Hardest Hit Areas

Sterling is at the end of the line and damage in Fairfield County means restoration work.

Connecticut Light & Power is adding crews to the hardest hit areas of the state, which include the eastern part of the state, the shoreline and areas around Ridgefield, company executives said during a conference call on Friday.

As of Friday evening, 118,000 CL&P customers were still in the dark.  Another 19,000 United Illuminating customers were without power.

In Sterling, 99 percent of the town remains without power five days after Irene brought massive amounts of rainfall and strong winds that knocked down trees and power lines.

Jeffrey Butler, president and COO of CL&P, said the reason for the high number of outages in Sterling is that it is at the end of a circuit. The line providing power comes through other towns and restoration efforts start at the substation and work toward the end of the line.

CL&P has sent 709 line crews and 279 tree crews in Eastern Connecticut.

The current estimate to restore power to Sterling is Monday at 11 p.m., but Butler said crews are out and he hopes to restore Sterling’s power today.

“There are a substantial amount of crews to restore power to Sterling,” Butler said.

Ridgefield, Weston, New Canaan and Redding are also experiencing high percentages of outages.

Butler said this part of the state was hit hard by the storm and CL&P must do a lot of restoration work in the area. More crews are being sent to the area to do that, Butler said.

CL&P has 230 tree crews and 135 tree crews in Southern Connecticut and the projected date to restore power to Redding is Monday at 11 p.m. Malloy said there are 1,900 crews out across the state.
