Organizers of the planned National Coast Guard Museum in New London are hopeful a commemorative coin proposed by U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney will generate millions of dollars for the long-awaited attraction.
The congressman said on Friday he has generated bipartisan support for legislation that would require the U.S. Mint to create a commemorative coin that honors the Coast Guard.
Proceeds from such coins average about $2 million to $3 million, but Courtney expects the Coast Guard coin will be very popular and will generate more money. The museum is expected to cost about $50 million to $60 million. The state of Connecticut has pledged $20 million.
John Johnson, who has backed the museum for 15 years, said he's very optimistic the project will be built. Groundbreaking is planned for April 2014.
