Consumer Protection Offers Advice to Bernie’s Fuel Customers


The state Department of Consumer Protection is reviewing Bernie's Fuel Oil Inc.’s business contracts and activities after the New London company filed Chapter 7.

“Consumers need to know that, while our agency will continue its investigation, each Bernie’s customer needs to take action, including individually filing a claim with the federal bankruptcy court, ” Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell Jr. said.

Farrell advises consumers to gather and save all receipts, records and contracts between themselves and Bernie’s Fuel Oil, and send written notice to Bernie’s that they are cancelling their contract effective immediately.

People who pre-paid for fuel by credit card and believe they did not receive all the fuel paid for should call their credit card company to dispute the charge.

Also, file a complaint with the Department of Consumer Protection. The agency will review complaints to determine whether any criminal violations were committed by the company.

“While I do want consumers to file complaints with our department, I do not want to create any false hope that there will be quick or full restitution,” Farrell said.
