When the Pequabuck River spilled over its banks on Sunday, Plainville residents watched in disbelief as their homes were swallowed up by water.
Floodwaters rose several feet on Robert Street Extension.
Art Screen said his home seemed to be beyond repair. The hardwood floors throughout the house buckled. Most everything inside was ruined when the water rose above the basement and on to the first floor.
"I’m flat broke," said Screen. "I can’t afford to fix it up and I don’t know what to do. I’m spending money right now that I don’t have to spend."
Two doors down, Scott and Kari Deprey were throwing damaged belongings in a huge, 30-yard dumpster that now sits in their driveway.
"We probably lost $25,000 in odds and ends," Scott Deprey said. "Between family pictures, kids pictures, trips, memorabilia, her wedding dress, washer and dryer."
But it’s what the floodwaters left behind that has these neighbors the most fearful. A strong smell of sewage and oil cut through the air. A sewage treatment plant sits not far from the neighborhood.

"You can smell the sewage, the swamp and every smells in my house, everything is starting to smell," Joy Chacon said.
Most of the neighbors are required to have flood insurance because of where they live, but they said it would not cover enough. They’re just looking for some sort of outside help.
