Cost of UConn Hartford Campus Rises to $140 Million

The cost of the University of Connecticut's new campus in downtown Hartford has gone up.

UConn's Board of Trustees voted today to approve a final $140 million budget for the project, up from an original design budget of $115 million.

Laura Cruickshank, UConn's master planner and chief architect, said more work than expected will be needed to stabilize the former Hartford Times Building, the centerpiece of the campus. She said some construction bids also came in higher than expected.

The extra money will come from contingency funds set aside as part of the state's $2 billion Next Generation UConn bonding package.

The board also voted today to offer its current campus in West Hartford for sale to the town. West Hartford will have 45 days to decide whether to enter into negotiations.
