Heat Creates Extra Challenges for Crews Responding to Hartford Fire

The heat added an extra challenge for firefighters on Monday.

A Hartford firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion after working at a fire at a liquor store and apartment building on Kensington Street on Monday morning.

Officials said the fire started at the liquor store at 167 Kensington Street around 7:30 a.m. then spread to an apartment on the second floor of the building. It became a two-alarm fire around 7:50 a.m. and was brought under control shortly after.

All of the firefighters who responded to the fire were rehabilitated after fighting it. Firefighters said even if they prepare for the heat, they still need help after working.

"It takes a toll so we try to force hydrating before the shift to make sure everybody is up on their fluid intake. We do have behind you guys, the rehab bus," said Deputy Chief Adam Guertin, of Hartford Fire Department.

One person living in the building was hurt after they fell coming out of the burning building. The fire displaced ten people who were living there.

The building has been deemed uninhabitable. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
