The man firefighters were looking for after a fire in Meriden was found dead at another location, according to police.
Firefighters responded to a home on Side Hill Road shortly before 5:15 a.m. Monday after the homeowner returned home and found the house full of smoke.
She called the fire department and crews found fire in the basement and extinguished the blaze. A firefighter sustained minor injuries while fighting the blaze.
No one was inside the home, officials said the fire department was looking for a person who was unaccounted for.
That person, later identified as 35-year-old Justin Miller, was found dead by a road, according to police. They said he was found at a location that would have been a short walk from the home through the woods.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined his death was a suicide and said he died by hanging.
The fire department is investigating the cause of the fire and accelerant dogs have been brought in.
The fire caused a partial collapse of the first floor of the home into the garage. Firefighters believe the fire started in the garage.
Mutual aid was called in from Wallingford, Southington and Berlin.
