Crews Work to Install New Sewer Pipe Liner in West Hartford

The Metropolitan District Commission began the process of replacing the failed section of a sewer pipe liner on Thursday morning on Linbrook Road in West Hartford.

MDC anticipates the work will be completed by Thursday night.

Several homeowners have been dealing with flooded basements after the pipe liner malfunctioned on October 3, causing sewage to backup into their homes.

”It’s really exciting to know that they’re finally going to get rid of these pipes on the ground and that they’re going to put the new liner in and try to get us back to some sense of normalcy,” homeowner Rick Bush said.

In a community meeting on October 18, MDC reassured residents that the malfunction was a fluke. The CEO said they have installed about 200 miles of the liner without any problems. The company estimates the repair will cost about $1 million. Representatives said they intend to hold the contractor responsible.

MDC is paying some costs to clean up homes affected by the sewage up front, and homeowners are submitting claims for reimbursement for other costs, a spokesperson said.
