Southbury's Spruce Brook Bridge is closed until further notice because the metal culverts that support it have deteriorated significantly over the past several months, according to a press release from the town.
Town officials said inspectors from the Department of Transportation checked the bridge Friday and "noticed a significant change in the condition of the culverts that compromises the safety of the bridge."
They returned to the site for a follow-up visit Monday and "recommended immediate closure," according to the own.
The bridge, which traverses the Transylvania Brook, will be closed indefinitely.
Public works officials have set up detour signs and road blocks rerouting traffic from Route 172 to Liberty Lane and onto Yankee Drive, which connects to Spruce Brook Road beyond the closure.
Southbury Public Works is working with engineers and members of the state Department of Transportation to come up with alternatives that would allow drivers to safely cross the brook.
