State environmental officials are urging drivers in the Thomaston area to use extra caution while driving because of moose sightings near Route 8.
The moose population is Connecticut is estimated at 100 to 150.
The animals can weigh up to 1,400 pounds.
They are found most often in the northeastern and northwestern wooded corners of the state, but the large animals have also been seen in most other parts of the state.
Moose can be difficult to see at night.
Should you hit one, there is the danger it will collapse through the vehicle windshield.
If you hit a moose or deer, report it to local, state or Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Environmental Conservation Police Officers at 860-424-3333.
Residents throughout the state are encouraged to report moose sightings on the DEEP Web site.
