Why a Waterbury elementary school principal was placed on leave has been a mystery for the last two weeks, but a local paper has uncovered the reason.
It all started with Brian F. Goggin’s alleged drunken night at a Berlin strip club, the Waterbury Republican-American reports.
An illegal U-turn tipped a Berlin police officer off on March 20 when Goggin, principal of Bunker Hill Elementary School, was driving on the Berlin Turnpike, according to the report in the printed version of the Republican-American.
The officer’s report says he smelled alcohol on Goggin’s breath. Goggin admitted to drinking at Centerfold’s, a strip club in Berlin, the Republican-American reports.
He was taken to the police station and held for four hours because he could not find a ride home, according to the news report.
On May 7, Goggin was placed on leave from his elementary school job after refusing to sign a “last chance agreement,” the newspaper reports. The personnel director is also investigating.
Paul Guidone, chief operating officer for Waterbury schools, told the newspaper there’s a direct link between the arrest and Goggin’s trouble at work.

Goggin's attorney, Jeffrey J. Mirman, told the newspaper on Thursday that the police charges against Goggin have no bearing on his job performance.
"He regrets the incident very much and is seeking counseling and hopes to return to his job soon," Mirman said.
