East Haven Teen Injured by Tree Returns Home After Months in Hospital

Nick Vessicchio continues to recover at home after a tree fell on him while he was mowing his backyard lawn in East Haven last July.

Vessicchio's brother, Michael, said the 16-year-old suffered a brain injury and now uses a motorized chair to get around. He needs around-the-clock care and goes to therapy every day.

The family had to convert their garage into a handicap accessible suite, his brother said.

Vessicchio is unable to speak fluently, however, he has said words such as "yeah" and "uh-huh." The teen is unable to stand on his own anymore and that is only one of the many things he is learning how to do again.

The family needs financial help so a family member can be by the teen's side full-time during his time of need. They also need a handicap accessible van to get Vessicchio around.

In October, East Haven High School students and staff celebrated Vessicchio by selling t-shirts that said #NICKSTRONG in order to raise money for the family.

The family is hoping for donations to help their son during his recovery. The Vessicchio family trust fund has been set up for fundraising purposes.
