Chemical Reaction in New Haven Lab Led to Evacuations

Emergency crews responded to George Street in New Haven Tuesday morning after receiving reports of an odor after a chemical reaction in a lab.

New Haven Deputy Director of Emergency Operations Rick Fontana said Tuesday morning that emergency crews responded to 300 George St. around 9:30 a.m., after the smell of gas was reported and ordered evacuations.

Officials from Yale University said the incident was in a lab that is not affiliated with the university.

One Yale University student who spoke with NBC Connecticut said she showed up for work and was unable to get into her building, which houses Yale science research facilities.

Route 34 westbound was closed at Orange Street due to the issue, which created traffic issues.
